INTD210 Interior Design Materials I: Cabinetry, Flooring, and Hard Surface

This course provides an in-depth exploration of hard surface materials commonly utilized in interior design projects. Through lectures, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and field trips, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the properties, characteristics, applications, and sustainability considerations of a wide range of materials, including but not limited to wood, stone, tile, concrete, metals, and glass. Emphasis will be placed on the relationship between material selection, design aesthetics, functionality, and environmental impact. Students will engage in material sourcing, specification, and evaluation processes, considering factors such as durability, maintenance requirements, cost, and cultural significance. Additionally, students will examine case studies of prominent interior design projects to analyze the effective use of hard surface materials in various design contexts. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions regarding material selection and specification to achieve desired design outcomes while considering practical, aesthetic, and sustainability considerations.
