SCJ362 Sociology of Gangs in Contemporary Society

An overview of the development of gangs in contemporary society, including: sociological tradition of theory and research on gangs; the response of the criminal justice system and other social institutions; gang structure and behavior. Emphasis is placed on the myths, perceptions and stereotypes of gangs in contrast to the reality of gang life. Trends in gang membership and composition, geographic distribution, and criminal activity will also be discussed. (Prerequisite: SOC104)
