Temporary Disability Accommodations

Faculty are required to accommodate students with disabilities, including those with temporary disabilities. Students are eligible for temporary disability accommodations when they have a condition or injury resulting in a transitory impairment with an actual or expected duration of six months or less, preventing them from completing academic work (assignments, exams, etc.), tasks, or activities.

Temporary disabilities may result from injuries or conditions like concussions, sports injuries, injuries from an accident, surgery, pregnancy, or any other injury or condition that causes short-term, non-chronic impairments.

A student can decide when/if they would like to use their accommodations for a temporary disability during the time frame they have been approved to be given accommodations; it is not up to a professor to decide when/if a student should use their accommodations.

Temporary Disability Due to Concussion

A student who is a non-athlete and has a temporary disability due to a concussion must report to the Health Clinic if they would like to receive accommodations. Student-athletes who have a temporary disability due to a concussion caused by participation in a sport must report to the Athletic Trainer on the Sports Medicine Team if they would like to receive accommodations. Temporary accommodations for concussions begin on the date the student reports the concussion to the Health Clinic or Sports Medicine Team and end on the date the student progresses to Zone 5 as determined by the Health Clinic or Sports Medicine Team.  During the time a student has a concussion, their accommodations may change depending on the zone a student is placed in, which is based on their progress as monitored by the Health Clinic or Sports Medicine Team. Non-athlete students with concussions are required to report to the Health Clinic daily for monitoring until they are cleared from their concussion; student-athletes are required to report to an Athletic Trainer on the Sports Medicine Team daily for monitoring until they are cleared from their concussion.

Academic Services will email the Concussion Protocol to professors of a student who has a concussion if they are in need of temporary accommodations.

Temporary Disability Due to Other Injuries and Conditions

A student who has a temporary disability due to other injuries and conditions must report to Academic Services if they would like to receive accommodations. Temporary accommodations for other injuries and conditions begin on the date provided by a licensed physician. Students must provide Academic Services with an official document signed and dated by a licensed physician that explains the student’s impairments and expected recovery time. These accommodations end on the last day of the expected recovery time. Students must provide Academic Services with updated documentation from a licensed physician if an extension is needed.

Academic Services will email the student’s professors an accommodation letter, which will include the dates the student should receive temporary accommodations due to an injury or condition.
